At least 31 pilgrims have been killed in mass stampede in Iraqi city of Karlaba on Tuesday, 10th of September 2019. The tragic incident occurred at Shia shine where Shia Muslims go every year to celebrate the grand son of Prophet Mohammed who died about seven centuries ago. The tragic incident also left more than 100 people injured about 100km south of Iraq’s capital Baghdad.

According to the health ministry spokes person,Saif al- Badr, the toll of those injured is yet to be accounted for. Hussein, grandson of the prophet was killed in the year 680 in what would become Karbala by the forces of the Caliph Yazid, a major event that helped solidify the divide between what would become Islam’s Sunni and Shia branches. People in Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Lebanon marked the day in jubilation, prayers and self-flagellation.
