The Volta regional secretary for the National Democratic Congress, NDC, Mr. James Gunu has commended the NDC Flag bearer’s decision to pay monthly allowances to assembly members when elected in the upcoming general elections.
Mr Gunu describes the initiative as a “major reform and relief” that can transform and strengthen the base of our local governance.
Some assembly members are calling on the government through the Local government ministry demanding placement on the public payroll to earn salaries from the state.
However, the former president who is the current flag bearer of the opposition NDC, Mr John Dramani Mahama in one of his Facebook live streaming said, “all Assembly members will be placed on monthly allowances to motivate the relentless jobs in their various electoral areas.”
The former President emphasized that his next administration will have a data on the number of new births and deaths recorded in a particular electoral area and this collected data can help in assisting the Electoral Commission (EC) in removing of dead people in the voter’s register and also to register new voters in the future.
John Mahama mentioned that, the Assembly members will be in charge of the death and birth registration, thus, his administration will be paying them monthly for their works since they will be Agents of the death and birth registration.
Mr. James Gunu, who is also the former Akatsi North District Chief Executive in the Volta region said, in the past, the work of assembly members were more like part time and voluntary.
He told Time FM news caster Kaakyire Kwasi Afari that, the duty’s of elected assembly member is now a full time job, and can’t continue to be voluntary since their quota towards development could not be swept under a carpet.
The Volta regional secretary called on all Ghanaians in the region who have attained the age of 18 years and above to register during the upcoming voter’s registration exercise by the Electoral Commission to help exercise their franchise to vote massively for the NDC party.
