The Chinese government on Wednesday said the United States of America has ordered Beijing to close its consulate in Houston. America says China must shutdown its Houston consulate within 72 hours. Just hours few hours after the announcement, smoke was seen billowing on top of the consulate as employees appeared to dump documents into flaming barrels according to a local tv station.
It is alleged that, Beijing diplomats were seen burning documents. The China consulate in Houston is alleged to have been a spy centre for the Chinese government.
“We have directed the closure of PRC Consulate General Houston in order to protect American intellectual property and American’s private information” spokesman for the State Department, Morgan Ortagus revealed in an emailed statement.
China however called closure of the Consulate “an unprecedented escalation” and has vowed to retaliate if the decision is not revoked.
“The unilateral closure of China’s Consulate General in Houston within a short period of time is an unprecedented escalation of its actions against China” China’s spokesperson for Foreign Ministry, Wang Wenbin said in a press briefing, called the action outrageous and unjustified move that will deteriorate already scanting relations between America and China.
